Hunt Lake Trail
Returning via the Ontario Loop
(Whiteshell Provincial Park)
(Info about the next Urban Walk, Sept 26,
is at the bottom of this message.)
Hunt Lake is one of the most popular trails we hike – and the most challenging. The central section of the trail is a series of steep climbs and descents, over paths that are a little rough because of an abundance of tree roots. There are some great views along the way, especially where the trail climbs 40 metres above West Hawk Lake. (The cliffs were created 350 million years ago, when a meteor slammed into the forest to create the lake.)
This is normally a one-way, in-and-out trail. But this year, to add to the adventure, we will return via an old path where the trail crosses into Ontario, making the trail a loop. We will be guided by Pat and Patti, a husband and wife team who have undertaken the full loop several times.
We expect to complete the 6.5 km Manitoba side of the trail in about 3 hours. We will stop for lunch at Little Indian Bay, then cross into Ontario to begin the journey home.
Manitoba, West Hawk Lake leg
The return leg does not have steep elevation changes of the Manitoba trail. But it is longer (about 9 km). And there are a few parts that are overgrown, requiring some “bushwhacking” -- pushing through sections where branches and other vegetation have overtaken the path. There are also 3 beaver dams and a creek to be crossed (over rocks in the creek bed). We expect the return journey to take about 4 hours.
Ontario Leg
Be prepared for a challenging day -- this trail requires considerable stamina. But, as Pat and Patti say, "at the end of the the day, you will be worn out, but secure in the knowledge that you'd conquered the toughest day hike in southern Manitoba!"
We will meet at Tim Hortons, 19 rue Marion St, beside Norwood Bridge, at 8:30 a.m. We will quickly arrange car pooling and be on the road by road by 8:45. If you are running late or have any problem, please call Thomas at (204) 981-2719.
We hope to be at the trailhead, around 10:30. We will take our time on the trail, with many rest stops. So expect to back at the cars around 7 pm. Some of us may choose to dine in the park before heading home; others may choose to head directly back to the city.
What to bring:
- water (2 litres),
- lunch and snacks
- repellent,
- good walking shoes
- fairly thick socks; an extra pair is recommended.
- “gaiters”, if you have them -- may be useful in preventing twigs and stones from sneaking into your shoes
- long pants and long sleeves, especially for the Ontario side, to avoid scratches from branches
- at least $20 for your driver and $1.00 for Out There (if you have not already paid for the season).
If you are interested in joining in this unique adventure, please register, by emailing tnovak@mymts.net (Do not reply to this email.) If you have questions or concerns about the hike, contact Thomas at the same email address.
Please let us know if you have a vehicle and can take passengers.
Pat and Patti caution that this is not a trail suitable for dogs – sorry!
