Join us as we explore the brand new...
The Onishkatoon-GwaykaadiziwinTrail
(Connecting the Shores Trail)
Whiteshell Provincial Park
Completed only last fall, this trail goes around the east end of Falcon Lake, connecting some established trails with several new ones – a half-million dollar project of the South Whiteshell Trails Association.
This new trail will be a first time for all of us. Those who have already travelled it report that it is somewhat difficult (8 on a 1-10 scale). This is due to its length (16.5 km), and to many changes in elevation. They also report many scenic spots along the way, where we can rest and take some photos.
This is a one way trail. We will begin at the Falcon Ski Trails and finish near Toniata Beach (where there is an option for a swim, if it be hot).
Meeting Place: Tim Hortons at 19 rue Marion St, beside Norwood Bridge
Meeting Time: 9 a.m. We will sign waivers, arrange car-pooling and leave at around 9:15. We should arrive at the trailhead by 11:30. We will take time to shuffle cars, assuring some vehicles at the other end of the trail. During that time, others can enjoy a coffee or snack at the nearby café.
Register by contacting Thomas at tnovak@mymts.net. When registering, please let us know if you have a vehicle and can take passengers. Given the high price of gas, we recommend payment to your driver of about $25 for the return trip and for the cost of a park pass. We also suggest a $1 donation for Out There – or $2.00 for the season.
Bring water, a picnic lunch and snacks, repellant, sunscreen, sunhat, good walking shoes and your camera.
Should we foresee not enough vehicles to get most of us to the trailhead, we will let you know by the Thursday evening before the hike. Should the forecast call for rain, we will send out a cancellation notice no late than 7:30 the on the day of the hike.
**Cancellation notices that need to go out for any reason will ONLY be sent to those who have registered ahead of time**
If you have a problem getting to meeting place, call Thomas at (204) 981-2719.
