Steep Rock Cliffs
Join us for a day at one of the most beautiful spots in all Manitoba, the Steep Rock cliffs, along the east shore of Lake Manitoba.
This will not be a typical hike, but more of an outdoor adventure. The highlights are the limestone cliffs that line the beach, and the clear, turquoise water of Lake Manitoba.
Participants may wish to spend the afternoon enjoying the beach and exploring the cliffs and caves along the shore. Some of us will also explore of one of the trails along the quarry (now a mini-lake), just east of the cliffs. These are flat, relatively easy trails, 3 or 8 km in length. The main challenge will be the intense summer sun, as there is not much shade along these paths.
There is a good swimming/wading option on the beach, beside the cliffs. But this is a beach that is mostly pebbles, rather than sand, so water shoes or thick socks are highly recommended. There is also a water option along the quarry trails.
Bring sunscreen and a sun-hat, repellant, lunch and snacks – and a towel/swimming gear/water shoes, if you are thinking of enjoying the water.
We will meet at 9 am at Tim Hortons, at 1146 Portage Ave (south side of the street, at Sprague St). There will sign waivers, arrange car-pooling, and be on our way by 9:20. Please pay your driver about $25 before leaving Tim’s. We also suggest a $1 donation for Out There -- or $5 for the whole hiking or walking season.
The drive to Steep Rock (up Hwy 6) is about 2.5 hours. We should arrive at the cliffs by noon. Assuming we spend around 5 hours enjoying our adventure, we may expect to be back in the city around 8 or 8:30 pm
For those who love camping, there is a very good (private) campground, within walking distance of the cliffs (Steep Rock Beach Park).

Late Summer and Fall Hiking Season
As we move into the cooler months of the late summer and fall, we will undertake a few longer, more challening hikes. (Urban walks will continue on with shorter walks, in or around Winnipeg.)
August 8 or 22 - Gorge Creek (Riding Mountain Park)
August 22 or Sept 5 - Connecting the Shores (Whiteshell)
September 26 or October 3 - Hunt Lake (Whiteshell)
