Out There Badminton
Out There Badminton has been designed as safe and welcoming space where members of the LGBT2SQ+ community can come together to have fun and to get some exercise.
The club is now closed to new members from outside the LGBT2SQ+ community. However, LGBT2SQ+ members may bring with them a friend from outside the LGBT2SQ+ community.
Out There Badminton is a great place to play a team sport without the pressure of a highly competitive setting. Don’t worry if you haven’t played badminton since high-school or are new to the sport. You’ll pick up the basics of the game pretty easily. After a few months, your game will improve and you will have made some great new friends. We have a wide range skill levels, so come out and have some fun.
A few evenings every season are designated women and non-binary only evenings. Check the schedule (below) for this year's dates.
We generally play doubles due to the number of players, but there is usually a chance to play singles if you wish. Twice per season, we’ll have an in-house, just-for-fun tournament. The club follows Badminton World Federation’s scoring system, with 21 rally point scoring system.
We play at Gordon Bell High School, at the corner of Maryland and Broadway. We use the junior gym, at the south end of the building on the second floor.
Normally you can enter directly into the gym via the stairs on the Broadway side of the building. If those doors are locked, enter the school through one of the doors on the west side of the school (on Borrowman Place) and come up to the second floor, south end.
Available in lot the just south of the school. The entrance to the parking area is via Borrowman Place.
We play (almost) every Friday from October to June. (There are a few Fridays when we need to cancel — when the school is closed or when the school needs the gym for special events. Please see the calendar)
Please note our new starting time: 8:00 p.m to 10:00 p.m.
You can just show up whenever you want! You can either pay the drop in fee of $2/week or pay $20 for the whole season.
Out There Badminton supplies the birdies. We also have racquets available for borrowing (at no extra charge).
We request that you bring indoor gym shoes in order to avoid scuffing up the gym floor. (If you really want to get into the game, you can buy yourself a pair of badminton shoes, but that isn’t a requirement.) We also recommend wearing athletic attire, because you can work up a sweat playing a couple rounds of badminton!
Of course, a willingness to play in a fun and non-competitive environment is a must!
